Why are ECO4 energy efficiency upgrades free?ECO4 energy upgrades are free for eligible customers because they are funded by UK energy customers via the 'Green Tax' on each bill. The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme is a UK government energy efficiency program designed to help households reduce their energy bills and carbon footprint by improving home insulation, heating, and other efficiency measures. It requires large energy suppliers to fund energy-saving improvements for eligible households, typically those on low incomes or in vulnerable situations. Here’s how it works: Government Regulation – The UK government requires major energy suppliers to fund energy efficiency improvements (via Green Tax) for low-income and vulnerable households to reduce fuel poverty and cut carbon emissions. Energy Supplier Obligation – Companies like British Gas, E.ON, and EDF must meet targets by paying for home upgrades such as insulation, heating systems, and renewable energy solutions. No Cost to Homeowners – The funding covers the full cost of the installation, so eligible homeowners and tenants don’t have to pay. Targeted at Efficiency Improvements – The scheme focuses on making homes more energy-efficient, reducing energy bills, and helping the UK meet its net-zero targets. This means that if a customer qualifies (based on income, benefits, or property type), they can receive these upgrades at no cost because the funding comes from the Green Tax, not the customer.
